That's a two edged sword.
On one edge, if you send him your name and address, he has them and then can come and steal the engine. Or the check, if he does send one, can bounce. Stipulate to him that if he sends you a check, it must first clear both banks before you will release the engine.
On the other edge, he could be perfectly legit and will really send you a valid check or bank cashiers check.
Personally, I like to ask them why they cannot just come to my house, pay in cash and take the engine with them when they leave.
Another way around it is to offer to send the item to them COD. Use UPS or FedEx and stipulate to the carrier that the payment must be made in cash.
You have to decide, based on your conversations with him, how you want to handle it.
