I assume it will just get worse but have no real experience with this trouble myself (yet), sounds like a car starter that has bad contacts, they just keep getting worse.
Motor's aren't too bad though, I see all sorts of aftermarkets ones, someone else will have to give you some advice whether they are as good as stock or not. I'm not sure how many whacks one will take without leaking & that would be the end for sure.
