I will say this about the Merc, your not gonna wear out the ring gear guessing if it is running or not.

Part of what's interesting is the EFFICIENCY you're able to achieve.......fastest speed meaning getting most from the hull, engine, prop, engine height all together. Lowest amount of drag and maximum push per horse power.
Is that a stock engine, and what's the actual hp rating at the prop ?
What prop are you running - size and pitch ?
