I agree that spending a ton of money on the tank is silly, but you can save the tank if you want. Just do your nuts and bolts thing (or course sand) then, after its clean, pour in some epoxy paint to coat and seal the metal. It must be epoxy because it's unaffected by gas after it cures. But really, how much money is your time worth? That's a lot of work for dubious results.
