I removed mine,then 1st repaired any of the cracks with glass cloth and resin.after that I added glass cloth and resin on all of the backsides of the outer retainer edges where the screws hold them in place.then I reinforced the backsides of the top,botton and sides of each box with wide pieces of cloth and resin.I sanded the retainer edges and any other spots that needed it then painted them up with a white textured spray paint.
It amazed me but they turned out looking pretty good after i installed new teak trim on each of them.
I'd like to find rubber inserts for the rod holder holes to protect the rods.
