I used to regularly tow my boat on my single axle Shoreline trailer to Fla. It's 1600 miles one way, never had a problem, not so much as a flat. But, like Reel and RW have said, make sure you have a trailer designed to handle the load safely. Oh, and don't forget to get one with brakes... disk or drum, your choice. I consider them necessary, some other's don't. Again, your choice, but for the sake of peace of mind and safety, I feel it's better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them.
