What Cam and what RW said... WD40 or Goof-off ... both will work fine and not destroy the shine ... but understand that if the letters from the PO have been there for a while it's NOT just adhesive that's left behind... The gell coat / paint under the letters/numbers has been shielded from the sun, so... as the rest of the boat faded, they did not... meaning that they are going to be darker/brighter then the rest of the boat... and no amount of rubbing or chemicals is going to change that.. Just fit the new numbers over the place where the old ones were as best you can to hide it.

If God didn't have a purpose for us we wouldn't be here, so
Live simply, Love generously, Care deeply, Speak kindly.
(Leave the rest to God)

Silence, in the face of evil, is itself evil. Not to speak is to speak, not to act is to act. God will not hold us guiltless.
