I have a 200 hp 91 Merc that does the same thing occasionally.. on mine it's a bad heat sensor that I'm too cheap to replace since the engine is a spare just sitting around. For me it sounds when I start and goes away instantly. As long as your temp gage is showing normal operating temp, your telltale pisser is showing a good stream and your engine feels warm, not hot when you feel the block I'd think you were ok.. of course that's just an opinion and to be perfectly safe I would get it checked as soon as possible..
