When a Destroyer moves at flank speed (32+ knots) it throws off a huge white bow wave. (Viewed head on it looks like the ship has a bow tie in it's teeth).
It's not uncommon for Dolphins to ride this wave for miles and miles. The pressure of the water is much like a surf wave and they ride it the same way while hardly moving.. in other words they are hitchhiking a free ride for miles and miles without expending any energy. They are so very smart.. people don't realize how great they are. One of them even spoke the other day.. he said "so long and thanks for all the fish"................................
