The ALPHA one leg came out some time in the early 80's(82 I think) and was the lower unit used behind everything from the little 2.5L 4 banger up to the 350 small block at 260HP. Before the ALPHA there was the MR I believe it was which for the most part interchanges with the ALHPA one. Your 470 probably has an ALPHA 1 behind it.
