Charlie, I'm with you brother on alot of that for sure but I still think that gulf will recover faster than the general perception.
This is a brain teaser we used to throw around when I used to hang out with a bunch of engineers.
If you had a hole in the ground full of water (or a section of ocean) 1 mile x 1 mile x 1 mile deep and you had a pump that pumped 1000 gallons per minute. How long would it take to empty the hole?

Now assuming that well put out 150 million gallons which to be honest I lost count but I know they said it exceeded that Mexico spill in early 80'swhich I think was in the low 100's that same pump would take 285 years....definitely an assload of oil but its 15 percent of the volume of just one square mile of ocean out there....spread that out over the whole gulf and I think the impact over the long term will be very manageable.
