A rebuild really isn't that hard. Just like going on a road trip, you need to have a map in order to get to where you want to go. Get a shop manual for your engine. It gives you detailed steps of what to do and how to do it. Not a Sealoc or a Clymer (although they are very good).. a manual from the company that made your engine. You can find them on eBAy for less than $10 as a CD-Rom.. When you get the disk simply print out the section you need so you have it by your side as you do the job. Then follow the steps they tell you in the book.

In the case of a carb rebuild you'll need some basic tools, a compressor or some compressed air in a can (computer dusters work well) a syringe to squirt cleaner into tiny holes and passageways, and a rebuild kit for each carb. You can get the kits from almost any marina that services your engine. There are both OEM and Sierra kits available. Sierra kits are usually cheaper by a few dollars. Both are good.

Really, the only thing you need to be concerned about is any plastic parts that are on your carb(s). It used to be the way you cleaned a carb was to throw it in a bucket of cleaner overnight and then blow it out with compressed air... but now with the plastic parts on them you cannot do that because the cleaner will attack the plastic. You need to find a plastic safe cleaner. The best thing to clean the plastic with is 100% denatured alcohol. You can still use carb cleaner on any metal, just be careful around the plastic.

That, and a few gaskets and "O" rings and you're good to go. It's easy really. (honest it is) Just take your time and go step by step. Do one carb per night, plus one night to remove the carbs and one night to reinstall and you'll be done in 5 days. The only thing you need to be very careful about is the jets.. use the right size screwdriver so you don't damage them when you remove and install them.
