Has the link and sync been done to factory specs yet? Have you put a timingl ight on it and set total timing at 5K RPM's and the idle pull off timing? Have you adjusted the fuel mixture on the carbs? The later engines do idle better, but there are more adjustments to be made to them to get em right. It sounds like you're getting some of the adjustments backwards though as far as the engine goes. On that engine you will have the idle fuel mixture adjustment which should be roughly 3 1/2 turns out for your starting point and adjust from there. These are the 4 screws that you adjust through the holes in the airbox. This adjustment is for the idle mixture, not the idle speed. You will also have a total timing adjustment which is made with the engine running in the water under load at 5,000 RPM's. The spec for this one is 17-19, but try to get it as close to 18 as you can at 5,000 dead on(it WILL change with RPM's). Then there is the idle pull-off timing setting which is the one that mainly controls your idle speed. This one is 2-6 ATDC set with the engine idling in gear in the water at normal load. You want to set it to idle at roughly 600-700 in gear and it should be within the 2-6 ATDC range if all is correct. This number can be thrown off if you don't have the idle mixture set properly on the engine as well.
