I was also recommended bracket and outboard. It would be the way I would go except for cost. I am not confident in used outboards. They can be a great deal, or a piece of trouble. Brand new outboards on a bracket are prohibitively expensive. Used outboards on a bracket are fine for those who can do the work (or most of it) themselves. Unless your sterndrive is toast, I would go with a new motor (like mine, but maybe a v8 with 220 hp) and overhaul of the outdrive.
