put it in forward gear, it makes it easier to spin the shaft to get teh crank splines to line up. The water pump is allmost a direct copy of the john rude design, with one exception, there is a metal sleve that slides over a plastic retainer, that on top of aseries of shims. I never have figured out what its there for, never tried to run one with out these parts. Just pay attention to how it comes apart after you remove the upper housing. The key can be a pain, its usually stuck in the shaft and takes a chisel and hammer to get it out, I allways sand the sides of the new key so it won't be such a tight fit.
