There is a central oil burning furnace which is fed by a large tank of oil. In most of those systems, the furnace produces hot water which is fed through copper pipes to distribute heat throughout the house (either through radiant units or units which blow air over the hot water tubes).

You asked about temperatures. It has been in the teens at night and 20's during the day for about a week here in Indianapolis, IN.
