Garage, 5200 doesn't harden... that's the way it was designed. I learned that lesson the same way you did... I filled in a few holes with it thinking I could go back and sand it down later, but no go...
You'll have to use some form of body filler. I can't remember the name of the stuff I used, it wasn't Bondo, but it reminded me of it...
