mainly because you are going over 1x material if you were putting down a layer of plywood you could probabaly get away with out it

I recently remodeled my bathroom and laid tile for the first time. I used wonderboard; no flex there; that stuff is awesome! I also used thinset underneath the wonderboard. I got the idea from some pros. I'm told it helps "waterproof" the area. A good idea for a bathroom...
My house is only 13 years old and the tile in my foyer is cracking all over the place. They laid the tile right over plywood! So, I'm going to redo that too. Oh well, the projects are never ending...
