I saw a pretty cool smoker type of grill on a Food Network show--called something "cooking with the Neelys."  It was a combo type of deal.  You could grill on the main portion of the grill.  Or, for barbecueing, you could put the wood/charcoal in a side compartment, put the meat on the main grill portion, and the heat and smoke from the side compartment would be drawn into the main grill portion and out the vents.
