MJ - The dealer in Hingham told me to use a punch tool and tap the cap closed. He said that a spanner wrench will work "ok", but won't give you the same leverage as the special yamaha tool. Might be worth a try do the last 1/4 turn with the punch . . . just don't hit it too hard.

Alternatively . . . I've seen lots of trim and tilt units for around $150 - $300. I wouldn't blow $1200 on a new unit.
