I've run a 1994 2.5 liter merc 200 for years. I use a stainless 19 pitch prop, WOT is around 6k & top speed about 45mph by gps. I've switched props in the past, & this one seems best.

If your alternator is only putting out 12.2 it's shot, that number should be over 14. A fully charged battery is about 12.7 volts, the charge has to be above that or no go.

I'm confused why you think the plate in the water would cause the motor to pull on the transom? The motor pushes the boat, more drag at the motor would just mean a little less push, but no more...

I used a 76 for 15 years or so, then bought a 78. Like others said, small screen but otherwise, the best. It's all I use.
