Help With Boat Identity.

Hello everyone, I am new to the site. Hope you guys can help me. I have been looking at the site for a few weeks and it seems pretty user friendly. I recently bought my first boat from an old Cuban guy here in Miami. I am the third owner of the boat. The title says it is a 1967 Fibra 20 footer, I have not been able to find "Fibra boat" but it looks just like a V20 from the pictures I have seen here. I will post some pictures and hope you guys can confirm my suspicion.

Currently the boat is powered with a Ford 302 engine and has a volvo 280 outdrive.

Thank you in advance.

Joaquin

Well its a Ray Hunt boat alright!! And a V20 hull, but with a few twists!

A quick online search showed another for sale, but no company history or anything else for that matter. The name seems to bring up some foreign sites that are unreadable to me, which suggests that it is a forgin Company that built them off the same Ray Hunt design.

Welcome to the site!

Foreign company

When you google Fibra most of the sites that come back refer to "Fibra de Vidrio" which is the spanish translation of fiberglass. According to the sign on the boat Fibra was supposed to be a Miami based company but I have not been able to find anything regarding the company. But can I assume that most of the things said about a V20 will apply to this boat?

Thanks

Joaquin

It might not have been a foreign company, but a Florida company who bought the rights to produce the boat (if indeed it was a Ray Hunt design, instead of an imitation).

Doing a Florida company search, I came up with this:

Fibra Boats, Inc.
Filed to do business in Florida 08/09/1965.
02/14/1969 changed name to Leisure Industries, Inc.
Status: Inactive.
Converted to Notes 02/14/1969 and 08/22/1970.

Click on Name History to see the original Fibra Boats name.

It's a start.

Digging a little deeper I can see potentially why they "converted" in 1969. I have found references in case law to Hunt Industries, Inc. v. Fibra Boats Inc. (1969) mentioned in cases of patents, intellectual property and experimental products. I haven't been able to find the actual case yet, though.

Wow someone has been digging!! Thanks for the info Pipe its very interesting, and another twist on V20 History!

CaptJJ 07-01-2008 06:31 PM

Yeah but how many people came in on it???

Good work there Pipe Dream! Maybe we can somehow add any info found to the history section.

A neighbor of mine has a boat almost just like that one; same deck cap, and windsheild etc. I've thought about asking him if he'd ever want to sell it. While I love my 85, I've got a soft spot for the old gals. I'll try to see if he knows any info about it. The one you have drbarbra is in good shape for a boat that old. Welcome!!
