Weekend Fluke
Well, as mentioned in my engine woes post, I went fluke fishing Saturday and Sunday off of Misquamicut, RI. On Saturday I took my limit (5) of keepers (20") and my buddy had 4. He brought some newbie with him and his lack of experience showed as he netted ZERO keepers and only a few fish total. I had to show him how to hold the rod properly.
Sunday was a different story.....fishing was awful. draggers are up and down the beach. I lost my net....it sank to the bottom. No net didn't matter much as there were few fish worth netting. The one chance we had to save the day was a solid 24" fluke that we had next to the boat. With no net aI tried several times to grab it but on the 4th try it shook the jog and took off. I nearly cried......so frustrating. Later we developed a technique of using my drift sock to scoop up the fish....in the end, no keepers. The first time I have not brought a single fish home. Here is a pic of the 2 nicest from Saturday. The biggest was close to 6 lbs. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...evinwFluke.jpg |
Good looking fish there Whale. You guys keep calling these fish fluke. Remember, I am from landlocked Indianapolis, but I always thought these were flounder.
|
They are flounder...fluke dont exixt....kinda like pop dont exist...its a freakin COKE!!!
Just kidding man...great job, nice FLATTIES! |
Yeah, fluke is Northeast lingo (I think) for Summer Flounder. We also have Winter Flounder, a much smaller variety in general.

Pop??? You must mean soda! :haha: |
I travelled to Arkansas once, and everyone there called it "sody." I thought you Northeasterners called it "tonic."
|
Oh contrar mon sheri, fluke are called fluke and they are a summer type flounder
And tonic is what we mix with our Bombay or Plymouth Gin for our sundowners after we catch our limit of fluke |

Like Willy says, tonic is mainly tonic water that you mix with gin even to Bostonians now. |
Congrats Whale they are some nice fish!!
Flounder is the smllest of the family you have black backs and yellow tails or winter flounder. Big lips, and you chum for them while anchored Fluke (summer Flounder are bigger (up to 20 pounds, most are under 10 pounds) and have teeth, and love to chase there food, you drift for these Halabit the Monster of the bunch!! Grow to the hundresd of pounds! I love to catch a big 300 pounder!! But for the most part they are all the same fish. |
:clap:Nice going Whale!! Seems like you are getting into some decent sized fish:sun: Its funny, every year the poot tuffer restrictions on us saying the Fluke stock isn't were it is supposed tobe, and every year we just keep getting bigger Fluke:sun:
I can't wait for them to put the limit @ 30', we will be slaying by then:beer: Putting the boat out front next week, so hopefully be cashing in on some fluke sooooon:love: |
