Emergency!

Ok I filled the tank with gas the last trip i went out. There is 110 gal in the tank.
When I got the boat I replaced all the lines and stuff. New vent also.
Today at my house the temp went to103* !! At noon it was like 90* already and as I was going to the store I thought I could smell some gas but I didn't ck for anything at this time.
I came home and went to bed at 3 pm. At 8pm tonight I was getting ready for work and in the house I could smell gasoline! I went and cked the shead and all around, I got to the boat and the dirt all under the boat was wet with gas, and I could see that it all leaked out the vent??
I removed the gas cap and the air almost blew the capoff as i was turning it!

Whats going on?? The vent must be clear to let the gas out so why isn't it venting the fumes??
What can I do to stop this?

Thanks guys!

I had a similiar issue MJ. My vent thru hull had a piece of corrosion in the screen and wouldn't vent until the pressure got REALLY high in the tank. I replaced the vent and it now it flows fine. Also make sure your vent line has a loop in it before it goes through the thru-hull vent, if it doesn't it won't slow the fuel down when it tryes to come out.

Or you could just siphon it all out and send it to me.

Thanks, I think with full tank the hose got fuel in it, then the vapor had no were to go, and as the gas expanded it just kept pushing it out. Cause qwhen I removed the cap all the air came rushing out!

The vent hose and the vent thru hull is all brand new, But I don't remember (and I know better) if I put a loop in the line?? But I don't think it would have helped??

I know I use like 20 gal a trip for Fluke, so when I go out Tue I will not fill at the end of the day, then when I go out wed I will just add 20 gal leveing me some extra room.

I am waiting for the b itch next door to start screaming about the gas smell!! I have no idea how much leaked?? But I have about a 18" circle in the dirt!!

Thanks Thefermanator!

Better hope she doesn't call the EPA,
then your house will become a superfund clean up site.

Maybe you oughta check and see if your vent hose is pinched somewhere. If it is all new, it should be able to vent easily without building up pressure. Or your new vent line may not be ethanol compatible and swelled shut.

Its all new and ok I looked today. But the gas tank is filled right up!! I think the vent is blocked with gas, and thats why pressure is pushing gas and not air??
I will fish tomorrow and not fill it again and see what happens.

air will always escape before a liquid will escape due to it being far less dense. it sounds like your vent when the boat is on the trailer is lower than your fill. and if that is the case by have a air tight fill cap if the vent hole is lower the only way for air to get out is through the vent and it having fuel in it the fuel will naturally shoot out. just a theory

All sounds good but I can put a level on my boat right now and she is level!
I will say after looking at all today it seems like the vent and fill are at the same level??
And being as full as it is, I think you are right that the vent is blocked. It makes sense!!!!
I am just going to use it tomorrow and not fill it, that should give me he room I need, we shall see.
I spoke to another guy today that I know he said that happened on my big boat also,I said how did you fix it?? He said I didn't it still happens sometimes!! :head:

Thanks guys!
