Sounds steep to me for a trim motor replacement. You can normally find a trim motor for $100-$200 and unless it's rusted together they shouldn't be that hard to change. Heck a good used trim unit is normally less than $500 for a freshwater one with no rust or corrosion.

I haven't done a MERCURY, but it doesn't look impossible to change with it on the boat.

to replace a merc trim motor you are going have to find a way to partial detatch the whole engine from the boat so you can seperate the clamp brackets to remove the trim motor. reason being there is no space to get to the back bolt with the engine in the boat. its not really hard just time consuming and pray you dont break bolts and that pin in the main ram isnt frozen

What year is the Mercury? I changed mine last year - it's a 1988 Mariner. I had to remove the starboard bracket (but not the engine) and I replaced the motor and pump as an assembly which was about $400+ for the parts. Check ebay - there are many later year trim components listed. Mine was a bit unique and none were listed on Ebay at the time.

Here is the thread I started almost a year ago. There are some pics on the last page

Good luck
