I like the "easy on gas" part at the end of his ad, that right there is funny. I didn't realize 12-15 GPH at an easy cruise was considered "easy on gas".

Well, maybe he means it burns it up pretty easy :head:

He means its easy on gas while its mounted on the crate, once you hang it on a boat it uses it like a 225 hp oldschool 2 stroker.

THEFERMANATOR 05-20-2008 12:10 PM

I guess it must mean it easily burns ALL of your gas:nut:.

Easy on gas compared to quadruple Merc 250 2-strokes.

THEFERMANATOR 05-20-2008 05:56 PM

Well they are not the worst on gas. The 60 degree looper 150's and 175's that OMC turned out actually burned about the same amount of fuel as a 200 LOOPER did at cruise, and the 200 only burned slightly more at WOT. A 200-225 OMC LOOPER should burn around 12-15 GPH at cruise and top out in the 20-23 GPH range. My 150 MERC burns 12-13 GPH at cruise, and tops out at around 20 GPOH WOT. A 175 JOHNSON 60 degree engine burned pretty much what my MERC does. The earlier 200-225 LOOPERS(86-87) were said to be the best fuel to HP ratio of an old school 2 stroker. But when a new OPTIMAX 175 is burning 6-7 GPH at cruise and topping out at 16-17 GPH WOT, the new tech adds up if you run them alot.

this looks like a good deal ...

i am looking for an engine for my 85 fisherman 20' center console. i found a bracket, but looking for an engine.

i have no info decal that shows max hp for my boat .. it is missing in action.

would this be a good motor for my boat? i know a lot about cars, but not much about outboard motors. is this a motor i can work on myself, are parts avaialable?

i assume i should be looking for a 25" shaft .. mine orig had a sea drive on it.

from the other posts .. it looks like it may drink some gas .. but the price seems right.

thanks in advance

Brad

GREAT engine for reliabilty, and about as basic as they get to work on. The 200/225's from 86-92 weren't horrible on fuel, but they will drink some. Up to 85 i believe the V-20's were rated for 200HP and in 86-92 they were rated for 235HP. I believe they rated the V-21 at 200 or 225.

Ferm.....I want a 175 for my 18....what years were better on fuel in 175 hp?
