Bought the new(to me) motor!

Well, I ended up buying BigShrimps 225 evinrude from him. I can't wait to get it all going, but I do have a question. On my '89 V20, origionally there was a '90 115 Evinrude motor. What I think happened was that the boat dealership had the boat and motor left over, put it together and sold it at a discounted price. I think this because I know the origional owner and he bought the boat new in June of '91. The 115 is a 20" shaft it ran good on the boat but would cavitate in real tight turns. The 225 is a 25" shaft and I need some help knowing for sure if I have to cut out and raise the transom. Anyone know exact measurements for a 20" or 25" transom on a V? I have measured it in the past but if I remember right the numbers were somewhere in between. Anyways, it was great to meet someone from this forum. Tim's a great guy and I wish him the best on his long roady he's got ahead of him.:hi:

You'll most likely need a jack plate or similiar to raise your transom up. A 20" transom is normally closer to 22" and a 25" will be 25-27" from what I have seen. A 20" shaft engine on a 25" transom would cavitate SEVERLY with a standard prop. So you most likely currently have a 20" transom. Many people cut the 25" down to a 20 because there engine is a 20". Just make sure that your cap is solid, I just replaced the aluminum cap on my HYDRA last week.
