in dont remember who, but someone here built a bracket out of steel before buying an aluminum one. i was asking because i wanted to know if they knew the weight difference between the two? thanks

Yep that was me!! Steel was at least double the weight!! Made main bracket out of 1/2 and then the swim platform and edging out of 1/4. Solid and I would have used it had a deal come up for a real bracket made of Alum didn't come up!
I sold the Steel one for about 1/2 it cost to build about 3 years later. Guy said he might use it, then again you might see it back on ebay??

thats what i figured, how much you think though 400-500?
i want to make one like you did but without the dive platform. damn 1/2 is some pretty serious thickness i was thinking about using 3x3 angle at 1/4 inch thick for the frame then wrapping it in 1/8.

bigshrimpin 03-03-2008 10:48 PM

You can make one out of fiberglass for about $500 in materials.

macojoe 03-03-2008 10:58 PM

That was a cost of like $400 the weight was like 250 pounds, Alum one is 125#
Yea it was over kill some!! But you almost have to go 1/2 were the motor mounts as its a heavy motor! Also made the front of bracket out of 1/2 as thats were its al mounted to the boat.
The wrap and platform could have been 1/8 I am sure.

I am trying to remeber what I painted it with?? It was a 100% Zinc paint they use for bridges. Even a small stratch would not rust cause of all the Zinc, at least thats what thery claim??

But before I would build this I would go and look for a used take off in a boat yard, ebay, boat mags ect... ect... there are lots around!!

sweet bracket..you welded it with a gun or stick? that weight doesnt seem to bad i probably could knock 50 lbs off of that weight without the dive platform and smaller steel.

macojoe 03-04-2008 06:51 PM

Was all welded by stick! I am not the best welder, A friend of mine did all the welding for me, he is always a little self doubting with his welding, But as you can see he has nothing to worry about!!
Thats a exact copy of the bracket I have on my V20 today!! Right to the T!!

I am going to weld up an aluminum bracket for my V. I probably won't start for at least a couple months. (coaching High School baseball right now is eating all my time) I used the thickness specs off of D&D's website. I have two very good friends who are mechanical engineers for Raycor. One of them did CAD drawings of all my han scribbled specs. I will post pics when I get started, also if I can figure it out, I will post the CAD drawings in order to get your guys imput.
