Rod Box Repair
 

I am in the process of a rehab on my rod boxes. So far I have stripped out the hardware & refinished it with Cetol Light. As for the boxes themselves, I have sanded with 180 & washed them down. Next step is to repair the cracks around the flanges and paint them.
Questions:
I checked the archives and read about using glass tape as a backer & then filling the cracks. Where do you get glass tape?
My plan is to add a wood strip to the backside of the gunnel cut-out for support as mentioned in the previous posts. What do you think about mounting the boxes with 4200 as opposed to screws? Seems like that coupled with the screws from the teak surround should keep everything secure & minmize holes in the flanges.

PK, personally, I don't like the idea of adheasive being the only thing holdin' something subject to that much weight and bouncing...it would be screws for sure if mine...I DO like idea of treated wood behind opening for added strength.... ;)...you can glue those in place, then let the screws pull tight...

PK I had to do the same thing in a 84, I ran a strip of wood around the opening in the liner and then screwed the boxes to that. I put 5200 on the wood and then c-clamped to the back of the opening. When i fastened the boxes it was much stiffer. I don't think i would use the sealer it would make accessing the gunnels a lot harder. I also put the 2"butt" ends of the rod holder in the one box and the 2 "tip" ends in the other box. I then put a strip of teak along the bottom of the box with the "butt" ends and this is a nice shelf for sunscreen, mask , snorkel, etc. I can still store rods in the other box and they are a lot easier to get in and out.

srews,i like the idea about the wood on the inside of the opening
i think im going to do that also thanx
the adhesive is no good for the simple reason is when you have to take the boxes out its going to be very hard and they can break beyond repair
