Liner question....(W/ Pics!)
Ok, so while I was cleaning up around the transom I started looking pretty close at the corners I cut out. Am I correct in thinking that what I see on the inside of the boat is really a liner made off the hull then glassed into it? I only ask because there are places it is seperating.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...n/DSC00286.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...n/DSC00287.jpg It didn't take much effort to pull this out :( http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...n/DSC00289.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...n/DSC00291.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y19...n/DSC00294.jpg I noticed that the liner seems to only be glassed in from where the cap meets the hull down about 4 to 6 inches. At this point I'm thinking of removing the liner because I'm concerned about the seperation I already see. Plus I wanted to redo the floor and layout (especially the cabin area) so being able to remove the whole liner make work out better for me in the end, although it looks to add a lot more work to my current project. The only real concern I have is I also realized there is a void between the liner and hull after the fiberglass that holds the two peices together ends. Does this void add some strength to the boat? What would happen if I were to match the thinkness of the fiberglass for the liner but not put the void back in? I think a call to someone at Wellcraft who is familar with the old v20 construction may be in order...anyone have any suggestions, input, or contacts with Wellcraft? Thanks! |
Re: Liner question....(W/ Pics!)
Well it is possible to make a new deck and leave the liner in place on the sides.
I know I like my liner as it is smooth and easy to clean, it gives you a place to screw brackets to hold boat poles, gaf, and what ever else you need. Removing the liner you will not have any were for this. Also belive that it adds a air pocket for flotation just incase! On my boat from what I have seen it all screws toghter with the rub rail. goes rub ril, cap, hull and then the liner. IMO, I would cut the floor all they way around the boat, pull the floor out, do what ever you want and then glass to the sides of the boat leaving the side part of the liner. |

Jeffxj,
Great amount of work your doing. You will know every inch of the boat when done. So give us the background on the V. Did you just buy it ?, how much ?, your first V ? |

Jeff...I will call this thread V-20 Cuddy REVEALED...great work and thanks for the pics...
Maco's right... better leave the liner in place, or find a way to better adhere it to hull and replace...JMHO... ;) :D ... |
Re: Liner question....(W/ Pics!)
I hope I understand your questions, Yes, the inner liner was a separate "inner hull" molded separately and really only bonded along the top edge and to the transom core. Wellcraft used a thicken resin and a row of screws and also the row of rub rail/ cap screws for this bond. The top of the stringers had some carbsil/resin applied but this bond rarely lasted very long. You can remove the inner liner but the hull would lose quite a bit of strength and the deck would have no place to be attached along the sides. It is a bad idea to attach the deck to the sides of the outer hull. If you remove the inner liner and plan to do stringer replacement the hull needs to be supported in a manner as to maintain its shape.

OR $50,000 and a cheaper made boat with a lifetime of payments. The last time I looked over any V20 owners tax records, none of us are rich!! So we make do with what we have. |
