Hydraulic Steering Adjustment
Newbie - to this forum- I Bought a 1992 v20 with hydraulic steering last summer and am wondering if the is any way to do the following:
1. Is there any way to take up slack in the steering?- it seems like there is about 2 inches of play in the wheel before you can actually turn the motor to port or starboard. 2. Is there any way to tighten up the steering? If you have hands off the wheel at low RPMs, the wheel kicks over to one side to the point that, if left unattended, the boat would turn in a circle. Thanks- |
Re: Hydraulic Steering Adjustment
Yes, you need to bleed the system. It's most likely Teleflex Seastar? Teleflex has great tech support. Start at their website, teleflex.com.
I've had to replace a few seals under the helm the last two years for friends. May just need bled, then again, there is probably a reason air got into the system? Airslot |
Re: Hydraulic Steering Adjustment
A hydraulic steering system in good working order should hold the boat on course...Airslot is right, you may need to replace some seals and "O" rings and drain and replace all fluid...sounds like a pain, but go ahead and do it, cause it'll be like new... and from time to time, steerin' can get pretty important while boatin' :o ... ;) ...

Re: Hydraulic Steering Adjustment
Airslot and Reelapeelin- thanks for the info- not sure what the manufacturer is on the hydraulics but will find out. I will probably back here asking more questions- thanks guys. Great forum!
Will post a pic as sson as I have her in the water- she's in winter storage until May- am counting the days. |
Re: Hydraulic Steering Adjustment
Go ahead and brush up on bleeding the teleflex system even if she's in storage. 70% chance thats what it is, and even if not, the basics are pretty much the same for all systems. Good luck...

Re: Hydraulic Steering Adjustment
In storage, but can you get to her to get some work done??...sure doesn't have to be in the water to rebuild the steering...probably better dry ;) ...if ya can, fix it now so yer not workin' on it durin' boatin' season... :D ...

Re: Hydraulic Steering Adjustment
Hopefully you don't have the old hynautic helm setup. Teleflex bought them out years ago and you pretty much have to switch your helm over to the seastar if you have helm problems like mine(and most every other HYNAUTIC helm owners I know). Mine is a real pain to turn left, you have to yank the wheel for it to move to the left. And you have to have the correct pressure in the reservoir to make them turn at all.
