Wax On Wax Off

My new V has some shiney spots but is mostly chalky (not real bad). *Are the shiney spots wax or clearcoat?

Do I need to remove them or just go over them as I do the rest?

Next question: *Whats best to shine up the chalky part, the guy gave me a bottle of 3M Marine Fiberglass Cleaner and Wax. *Anyone use this?

Well, I tried a small area with the 3M, it did ok but I think I will need to use a power buffer for two reasons.

I didn't get the shine I wanted, and I aint gonna do the whole @#$%$! boat by hand.

I would recomend using ORPINE soap with wax once you get those spots buffed out. I had a boat that I used some cleaner on and it left it chalky(took the wax off) and the ORPINE with wax brought it right back. Plus it has a really nice pine scent that lasts. Normally an ACE hardware has it.

Re: Wax On Wax Off

i took my old Mitchell to the car wash and blasted the chalk off of it( took about $10 worth of quarters). After I got home, I let it dry for a day, I went back and put several heavy coats of wax on it, I wasn't too worried about how good of a job of polishing it, just getting wax on it. Then I started buffing it with a cleaner wax. One of the boat detailers told me to try it this way, the wax gets in the gel so it makes buffing it easier, and it keeps it from absorbing all the buffing compound into the raw gel. Worked pretty good for a boat that probably hadn't been waxed in 15 years.

My 32 year old V has not seen any wax since 1999 and I like it that way!! ;D

I use it, spray the salt off and use it again!

When there is tree $hit and blood all over it I bleach it hose it off and use it!!

No time for playing when the fish are biting!!

Randleman, some guys used teh 3m wax and said it was great. I used it and wasnt impressed at all. The cost of it was well over priced as well. Power wash that baby and do a quick compound and wax job. She'll be fine. Great pics. ;)

Randleman, I think that boat has been painted and what you see coming through is the original gellcoat. Try and wet sand or strip the paint off the hull and follow with 3M Fiberglass cleaner.

Not great pics but all I got. I wet sanded the top sides and waxed by hand with 3M Fiberglass Restorer. I didnt sand the hull sides only waxed.
