Quicky

Did a quicky repair job before going to work. I played with the plasma cutter today that the city bought. Having fun learning to cut metals. C.Y. posted the first thread on repairing his. Well this is my quick repair. Wasnt bad, but drilling through stainless killed 4 bits. Should have just burned a hole with the P. cutter. Went larger for the support as well. *;) The old support piece crumbled right off. :-/
She's good for a life time now. ;)

Re: Quicky

Next time you drill stainless, go slow with lots of pressure. You only get one chance to cut with stainless or it will work harden. I've had regular HSS bits make a hundred holes without sharpening, then I've also had moments where I had to sharpen a bit nearly 10x to make a single 1.5" deep hole.

Ok, I have to jump in on this one.

My job as a heavy truck engineer requires that I know how to drill hardened metals,
i.e. 140,000 psi tensile.

A standard metal cutting drill bit will work, but, when you sharpen it
make the angle 15 degrees, do not force the bit into the metal,
it will only burn it.
do not run the drill at high speed, again burn up the bit.

Slow speed, 15 degree angle and constant pressure,
you will see a ribbon of steel being cut, this is correct.
You should not see chips.

Last but not unimportant, cutting oil or a little motor oil mixed with water.

LOL. Well I had that plate on teh drill press, the press was shaking and teh bits were cherry red. Took at least a good hour to drill two holes. The good thing was, the bits I killed belonged to the city and not me. ;D
