spider cracks on deck getting wider.
I was wondering what to use to fill in and repair spider cracks that are on my deck. Some of them are getting wider and I want to stop that now before things get worse. There are quite a few all over the deck and I would need something that's easy to use and doesn't require a science degree to use. ::) I would also like something that you just put down and not have to worry about painting, sanding, adding hardeners, etc. I don't want to get in a long drawn out project, just want to fill the cracks and stop them from getting any wider. If there is any product that I could use which is similar to the driveway crack sealer, where you just pour into the crack and it self levels and voilas, crack fixed, please inform me.
I figure some of you V veterans can steer me in the right direction. ;D Thanks in advance |
Re: spider cracks on deck getting wider.
Well I am no Vetran, but I did stay @ a Holiday inn Last night ;D
I just used some left over Formula27 and worked it into the cracks with a puddy knife. Came out all right to. |
Re: spider cracks on deck getting wider.
Well there must be some soft floor there to cause flex to make them get wider.
There is no easy fix if you want o do it right!! First thing is to check deck for soft spots. Repair as needed. Second you need to take a dermel and V out the cracks, at this point you would glass and sand to fill the void. Then sand and paint. Could try to fill with F 27 but that just fills the crack, if there is flexing in the deck and the crack gets wider it would last long. Good Luck! |
Re: spider cracks on deck getting wider.
Spider cracks are usually gel-cote only and appear because the fiberglass under it flexes due to non-support ...if Sean's don't come back, he'll be one in a million ... I've never attempted to repair the many I have, cause I hear they'll return unless you can stop the flex of the glass ...
...and MJ's right...they're supposed to be ground out and filled to repair ;) ... |
Re: spider cracks on deck getting wider.
MJ,
I did check for soft spots and the floor seems very solid and no sagging. I weigh 250+, also with me and my two fishing buddies in the boat the floor is solid as can be. I suppose the boat being 31 years old has alot to do with the spider cracks. I should have been more specific when I stated "the cracks are getting wider". What I meant to say is that I noticed a couple cracks(near the first storage well closest to the transom area) were a bit wider then all the others. Also the wider cracks are about 1/64th of an inch wide, no really superwide cracks mostly spider line size. Maybe I am being to overly worried about the cracks but I figure why not try and fix them now before it gets out of control. I will try and fill the wider ones with Formula 27 and see what prevails after that. Thanks guys |
Re: spider cracks on deck getting wider.
I have two cracks between the first and second floor tanks, I filled them and painted the hole deck, and they still came back, so I just live with it. More hassle then it worth. Throw some 5200 or something on it iof you fell its not sealed.

Re: spider cracks on deck getting wider.
LMAO @ MJ ;D and REEL how true how true!
I was going 4 wheeling once with the ATV and we were on the Mass Pike heading out to Western Mass for the Berkshires. We seen a guy towing his machines in an enclosed trailer and on the back door was painted, " If my wife let me ride her as much as she lets me ride this ATV I'de be home right now instead of going 4 wheeling" LMFAO So I should get a sign painted,"If my wife wasn't such a darn good cook, I'de be a skinny beanpole" besides I am always telling her,"sweetie, who else do you know that can provide heat in the winter and shade in the summer like I can!" ;D |
