VRO Pump Problem?

Went to the dock Sunday to put the boat in and it would barely start and when it did, it smoked like hell (10 times worse than normal) and would run for 5-10 seconds then bog down and shut off. I pulled the couling off and looked inside and noticed oil running out of the air ports. Not Good! Almost seems like the VRO is sending too much oil to the motor and is over pressurized. The motor is a 1994 Johnson 175 Ocean Runner. It ran fine July 4th and has just been sitting since. Any suggestions? I know I should disconnect the dang thing and probably will if it is found to be the culprit.

first disconnect the oil injection and run premix. the VRO mix's the gas and oil internal so it won't cause raw oil to run out of the air box unless it's not pumping fuel. it may be pumping oil but not pumping gas. are you sure your gas line isn't stopped up.

I will check it when I get home. The in line fuel filter and fuel water seperator are brand new. The man I got the boat from let it sit up for quite a while with Stabil in it and the gas was almost bad when I got it. I ran the old gas out but the carbs were still not running 100% more like 85%. Do you think I will have to get the carbs cleaned from the oil backing up in them? Everyone has told me I need to disconect the oil injection I guess I should listen.

My 1994 has never had the VRO hooked up but its sounds like your getting oil and not gas. If that boat sat up for a long time you should rebuild or have the carbs rebuilt as most engines that blow have a carb issue and run lean burning a cyl wall.

Thanks for the recomendations fellas. I fixed the problem last night I think.

I removed the oil line from the oil res and drained it out first. (it had alot of pressure on it) Then I opened up the valves on the carbs and shot carb cleaner in them. I then disconnected the fuel line to check for any obstructions. Hooked it all back up turned the key and she started. It blew smoke like crazy but it went back to normal after about 15 minutes of running on the hose. I am 90% shure carbs need cleaning but I am going to try some sea foam first and then new plugs to see if that helps.

I would not fool around with sea foam or any of that stuff and just get them rebuilt. If one is running lean or has a clogged jet the motor will seem fine until that cyl burns up. I have a friend who works on Outboards and he says most of the blown heads he see's could have been prevented by having a carb. job.
