Repowered with 200hp

I just repowered my 89 V-20 boat from the original 150 force with a 97 200xl offshore mercury with a 21 pitch prop and man will she handle great. I took her out on the test run here on St. Simons Island Ga. with a strong 2ft chop and I am very impressed with this V-step hull, I have owned several boats in the past and i don't think for the size nothing could touch this boat for light offshore fishing. It will top out at 51mph and cruised at 40mph.

Thanks for the info on the speeds as I am going to repower before splashing this spring. How did you measure your speeds?

I mesurure speep by MPH and as far as the RPM'S funny you should ask i have been outside all day trying to get my tach to work i have tried all kinds of things only thing i can think of is tach is broke. It worked fine when I had the other moter on it. I have been cruiseing at 40mph by sound of the eng. it tops out right at 52 so i just back off by sound and run right at 40mph. I will be buying a new tach this weekend and see if that works and if it does i will let you know about speed and rpm's

Hey knight...didja know tachs have adjustments on back for different motors...goin' from a Force to a Merc would probably require it...hope this helps... ;)

The merc is a v6 and the force was a 5 cylinder. May be the difference.

Also, an '89 Force was likely rated at the powerhead. The 150hp on the cowl is probably 135 at the propshaft. The new motor is 200 at the propshaft, so you didn't get 50 more horses, you probably gained closer to 65. ;D

Re: Repowered with 200hp

Good info knight. I've located a leftover '04 Johnson carbed 150 for $7,200, which should push my boat to around 40 mph. But I'm still toying w/the OX66. 200hp seems like a lot for my old girl, but I don't have to run her wide open all the time! However, that's closer to $11k here in CT.

I ajusted the setting on the back of the tach still not working i guess i will take it to the shop where i picked up the motors and see if the mechanic knows whats up. I will let ya'll know what the outcome is. Yea CT_V20 i was a little scared about that much HP on the back of my 89 V-20 but i did pull the cap off and took out all the old wood in the transom and poured it with this new stuff called seacast and it is solid as a rock. Thanks for all the input on the tach.

CT_v-20,

That's a pretty good price on a new engine. Are you in Connecticut? Where did you get that deal? I am looking for a new 150 as well and most prices are 8K plus for new. Does he have any more like that?

Thanks

Carl
