Mercruiser 190

I am restoring a 81 V-20, the 170 HP Mercruiser was frozen and I got a deal on a 190 HP 470 Mercruiser to replace it. The 190 has to use a different inner plate the inner plate for the 170 HP has the Trim pump mount on a bracket on the inner plate the new plate does not have the bracket so I have to mount it somewhere else. Has anyone else installed the 190 HP Mercruiser to replace the 170 HP? The 190 Hp is supposed to be a much desirable motor because of the alum manifold and the 4" heat exchanger and the 4 barl carb is more reliable. Also any comments on the control cables would help the throttle cable is longer and must cross over the engine then over the value cover to the hook up.

Got to love them Alum maniafolds!! as soon as they heat up you will be wishing for steel!!
4 bar carb, like putting a straw in the tank, you can watch the gas gauge go down as well.
190hp, wait till you get it in there and the starter goes!! Itslike putting 500# in a 50# bag!!

If you haven't noticed yet I hate the I/O!! Been There done that!!
Thats why mine now has a bracket and a outboard!! And I can't be happier!

Good Luck ;D

My Mercruiser 165 (1976 issue) was updated with the new low flow hydraulic pump which is just mounted on the port side deck by the transom, attached to the outdrive by just the hydraulic lines...it required a new shift cut out switch mount though....

Thanks Brian I think I'm going to fabricate a mount for the port side on the balkhead to the motor compartment. Do you have problems with the front motor mount box built in the motor compartment? In mine the box was built and attached to the bottom of the boat and water accumulated in the compartments in front this caused the plywood to rot on the motor mount box. I cut out the box and replaced it with a piece of 3x8 which is treated for salt water my son is in marine construction got me the wood and said it is supposed to last 30 years in water I wraped it in fiberglass this leaves room in the bottom for water to pass through.

Hi Tom,

My mounts are still solid, the boat has been fresh water and trailered all it's life until I got it. The only real problem with the hull/deck is the aft panels (either side of the motor box) rotted away so now it's open from helm seat to transom. i plan on replacing the panels eventually as time permits....

Photos are in the gallery

Good luck!
