GAS TANKS

On my V, someone along the way replaced the standard 60 gal gas tank with a 28 gal tank. *Does anyone make a tank that fits in the standard floor space that is larger that 28 gal? *I have looked online and in catalogs but all the big tanks are much longer than the standard hole.

Do you have to get a custom tank fabricated?

Re: GAS TANKS

A lot of people take there old tank and have it copied.

But $$$ I thought that liquiddate place in FL had some that would fit?? But there was a problem with shipping, not a lot of shipping co. want to ship a gas tank even if its new! So if you go that route you will have to talk with the co. and have it shipped in a non marked box and say its a water tank if anyone asks.

How big is the area H X W X L and remember when you measure you include the filler neck with the height! I have seen people get there tank all happy and find the tank fits but the neck is to high!

Re: GAS TANKS

The hole in the floor is 31" wide X 43" long. The depth is approx 13 " in the center and 11" on the sides (because of the V hull). Most of the big tanks I have found are narrower and longer, 55" +.

Re: GAS TANKS

RB,

The price for a custom fabricated v20 aluminum tank is about $600 in New Jersey. This tank would be an exact copy of the 60 gallon original tank but with thicker aluminum. (1/8" vs the thinner Wellcraft original equipment) Of course, since I keep my V in NJ, taking the old tank to the fabricator and having him copy it is not a problem. I don't know where you live but there are alot of metal fabricators in NJ and unless you really live in the bushes there is probably one near you that can do the fabrication. By the looks of your V, it appears to be a 1983 to 85 outboard model. I have an 84 outboard V and I have the exact dimensions of my 60 gallon original Wellcraft tank recorded somewhere. When I find the dimensions, I will post them in this thread. The width and length of the original tank are very close to the 31" X 43" hatch opening in the floor. Getting the tank in and out is a PITA because the hatch opening is just alittle bigger than the tank.

My old tank wouldn't come out of the bilge without some creative shoehornig. My new tank is custom fabricated and is only 55 gal so it would fit. My new tank is the thicker aluminum cost me a little more than $500. The guy who built it I would highly reccomend. His company is Mattson & Co Inc. and is located in Tampa Fl. He's a real down to earth guy and isn't going to try to sell you something you don't need. I have his number if anyone wants it.

OH MAN, THAT'S PDC (pretty darn crappy) to replace a big tank with a little tank. I guess it could be worse. Need to find a V that's headed to the dump so you can steal the tank....otherwise it looks like its gonna cost $$.

Good luck RB!

Randleman

Remember that other V I was telling you about I might could get parts off of ? You may be able to get that tank but you would have to take it out. If you want I can get him to let me know when he gets the mechanic's lean so he can dispose of it.

along these lines, i was giving thought to having something made to fit in the well in the cuddy and putting a permanent cover over it. should increase my capacity by about 30-45 gallons.

any thoughts?
