I know this going to sound funny but here goes:

The formula you quoted is correct 95% of the time.

We used to have to figure submarine ballast tank capacity (for water/fluids) based upon known figures for the type/thickness of steel that was used to fabricate the tank. Metal tanks are also welded inside and the size of the fillet weld has to subtracted from the inside dimension, also they usually have baffles in them to keep the fluid from washing back and forth which also has to be subtracted from the inside space.

If the tank is made of a different material/thickness and was holding non water then the 231 would be changed to fit the material/thickness and type of fluid it would hold/contain. How this changes everything has to do with the material thickness changes the size of the space a tank would fit in, a 1/4" thickness (material) now takes up a extra 1/2" of the open space the tank can fit in.

I know I went on about this but everyone can use the LXWXH/231 and you will be close.
