Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Hello I have a 74 V-20 CC we bought last year with out a motor , the boat is in nice shape with a new tramson redone by a local marina 2 years ago. The local marina called the other day and one of the customers wanted to trade in a 83 Merc Black Max 150 for a new motor well to make the story short I grew up with the salesman and he had the motor checked out it was fine tons of new parts including a new lower unit 2 years ago rebuilt carbs last year and water pump, new starter I ended up matching what the dealer offered 700.00 and I bought it. The compression warm was 117-120 psi across all 6 cylinders and it fired up cold on 2 cranks. Here's the problem the motor is a 25 inch I need a 20 inch shaft the dealer said to just use a jackplate it would save a lot of money . Has anybody here ever use one. I like to hear about it ......Ted

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Hey Blu...welcome to the board...we just had a Mako here the other day that was fitted w/a long-shaft motor on a jack-plate...looked like a great idea to me...the comment was made that you'd have to have a good, solid transom to make that work and sounds like you have that...I'd say go for it... ;) ;D...take pictures of the project and post them here...would be interesting...

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Thanks, I can't wait for it gets a little warmer{it's 18f today} so we can start working on it. It's a nice step up from the old Starcraft 18 ft tri-hull to this. We were stuck fisking the bays here for fluke and porgies . Now we can get out in to Long Island Sound and the race. This fall I be out salmon fishing at Lake Ontario .....I'll get a picture of the boat posted soon.....

Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
Blue - I've never run one, but I know that is a common fix for people in your situation. I'm headed out wednesday to pickup an older blackmax on craigslist . . . it's got a 20" shaft and I need a 25" :) I'll let you know what kind of shape it's in . . .
BTW - I love blackmax motors!! |

Jack Plate shoukld be fine for what you want!!
Do I smell a trade on motors coming?? |
Re: Any Running a Jack Plate Here?
The lower units are interchangable on all blackmax motors. There were a few different gear ratios offered depending on the model.
1.87:1, 2:1. 1.78:1, etc. There are a few other parts that you need to swap aswell. I think shipping is about $60, but you could always have them put in a 20" shaft too . . . that shouldn't cost too much. |
