Need Help Identifying a V 20
Hi guys ( and gals)
I found a pretty derelict boat in an old marina. At first I said to myself. "ah ha, a Step lift V 20" But now I'm a bit confused as to what I've found. There is no hull ID number on the port or starboard transom. But it's a center console and on it there's an old ID plate. The plate tells me that it's a V20 O/B fisherman. The Serial number is F220185 and it's rated up to 220 hp Yet the boat has no hull liner. I thought all of the V20's were lined hulls, no? Yet this simply has a deck attatched to the outside hull, and a fairly wide cap. No liner. in the rear of the cockpit there is a box on each side, it too glassed right to the outter hull. Any idea what year this thing might be? Was "no liner" an option for going the cheaper route for a buyer? any help would be appreciated, thanks Bob |

Kind of like this?
http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...amp;id=page014 The older hulls looked a bit different with no inner liner. BTW; Welcome 8) |
Re: Need Help Identifying a V 20
Wow, Bingo!
That's exactly the hull. Thanks for finding that! Now another question from a newbie. Would the hull be the same as later years, with just the interior layout different? Thanks again |
Re: Need Help Identifying a V 20
Yes, the hull itself is unchanged with the exception of a few of the last few years in the '90's where the transom configuration was changed to lengthen the hull to a 21' Still essentially unchanged though. Check into the gallery section and browse through some of the history/literature and member gallery posts and you'll get a better understanding of the progression over the years. ;)

Re: Need Help Identifying a V 20
Thanks Chum,
I've been watching this site for a couple months, and wanted to pick up one of these "V 20's". I'm not sure if I want a project as large as the derilict I've found, but there's no doubt the hull has beautiful lines. Thanks again for your help |
Re: Need Help Identifying a V 20
say it has no HIN in the transom on either side? if so it most likely has had a transom put on and the numbers were just not replaced back on it.

The HP rating though has me confused. My '72 service manual, as well as ads in history section stated maximum HP of 140HP for the '72. (that '71 ad linked above shows 135HP max). I didn't look on plate for max HP. Could it be that much different? Seeing this post with a pre '73 and a 220HP rating has raised my hopes. |
Re: Need Help Identifying a V 20
Judging by the amount of holes through this transom, I'd have to suspect it was not replaced. I can find no evidence of anyone ever being in there.
I found that discrepancy too. The Center console plate definitely says max HP at 220, while the brochure that Chum posted and the others of the era suggest max HP's of 135 and 150. That's why I said that this boat is a bit confusing! |
Re: Need Help Identifying a V 20
They held all of 200hp!! You might be looking at what they think was min?? But they are in fact still rated for 200 or better, I like to have the cash to add a 200!
