Removing Boot Stripe
I removed the Ronald McDonald boot stripe that was on my V20, it was brown, gold and red. I am now left with that super glossy original gellcoat under where the stripe used to be. I'm pretty sure no amount of buffing will ever be able to match where the stripe was. Any suggestions for dulling down where the stripe was to match the rest of the hull?

Re: Removing Boot Stripe
Go back with a solid black or blue stripe . It should not be to hard to do since you have the old lines to follow.

Re: Removing Boot Stripe
Yeah, that's what I'll probably do as well. Black or blue stripe, but not red ;D

Re: Removing Boot Stripe
I thought about a blue stripe, Boaters World has a 3 tone blue stripe that looks real similar to the stripe used on the 80's V20's. I really like the way the boat looks without the stripe. I guess I can always try sanding the glossy area first and if it looks bad, I can always cover up with a new stripe.

Re: Removing Boot Stripe
Mulv,
I think sanding the gloss will only remove the sheen. I think the difference in color will remain. Not sure though. I suppose it's worth a try. Let us know how it goes. Just remember, if you have to use a boot stripe, black or blue, but not red. Right MJ? ;) |
Re: Removing Boot Stripe
The reason the two surfaces don't match in appearance is oxidation...get a good oxidation-removing compound & wax and take a buffing wheel to it...you'll be amazed at the result and probably won't need a stripe at all ;) 8)...

Re: Removing Boot Stripe
I would try compounding and buffing/waxing first before sanding.
If that didn't work, I wouldn't do another thing! But that is just me. I'm like a couple others on here and I'm not really a finatic when it comes to cosmetics. I'm all about usefulness and safety. BUT, I'm a really busy guy and I think if I could ever get "caught up" with everything in my life, I would probably be able to focus on cosmetics ;D P.S. I know I will never get caught up! Its the nature of the beast. Life that is... :'( |
Re: Removing Boot Stripe
Before and after shot. *I used a hair dryer and razor blade to remove the stripe and acetone to remove the residual adhesive. *I buffed it up with some 3m Restorer wax and she looks pretty good. *The boat came up much darker as you can see in the picture after the oxidation was removed. *I also wet sanded the old painted on name.
