Exhaust Bellow?
So the lower exhaust bellow on on my 1984 Alpha 1 outdrive is dryrotted and split. the guy at the repair shop said it was not a nessecary part, and did not matter if I replaced it or not.
What do you think? I think all kinds of crap is going to get in there if i leave it go, like crabs, jellyfish and etc. |
Re: Exhaust Bellow?
Well who ever is your outdrive guy is, Run away from him!!!
Its not there just for looks!! It carrys the exhaust to the prop and it goes ont thur there. No bellows, will allow water to back up to the motor and maybe in the boat. Change it!! |
Re: Exhaust Bellow?

it is going to be a pain in the *** changing that thing. |

Re: Exhaust Bellow?
They have a water shutter below the elbow that keeps water out of the motor and there is no way water can get into the boat either
|
Re: Exhaust Bellow?
This might help. My buddy and I made a tool to do his. It's a tough job, but this made it alot easier.
http://mercstuff.com/bellowsexpander.htm I agree, it's there for a reason! Good Luck |
Re: Exhaust Bellow?
I don't know ANYTHING about I/Os, but I'm pretty sure that particular guy isn't somebody I'd want workin' on my boat... :P...

Quote:
Try starting in your yard with out the bellows and see what happens, 1 there is no muffler (the water is your muffler) 2 water and exhust and all kinds of crap going to blow all over the outdrive, 3 the heat and water oil ect... will make the other two bellows go more quickly. 4 And if the shifting or drive bellows go it will fill your boat in short order! Change the thing! |
Re: Exhaust Bellow?
i dont remember saying anything about shifting or drive bellows *what I said was no way water was going to get into the boat due to a bad exhaust bellows
|
Re: Exhaust Bellow?
and I didn't say that you did ???
I said with the exhust blowing all over the other belows it would wear them out in short order! |
