My first fishing post
was waiting till I had some decent pics, but these will have to do. Got into the spot tails the other night. Biggest one was 36", smallest was 26". All the reds were released, put two nice specks in the cooler(16" and 21")

Re: My first fishing post
Nice going! I have always wanted to go down south a litle and fish them, they seem like a Blast.
What type of gear do you fish with for them? |
Re: My first fishing post
we were using mud minnows on a circle hook free swimming in the current, no weight or floats. Had a Falcon 7' medium light, Penn 4300 spinning reel, spooled up with #25 power pro, #30 flourocarbon leader, its my favorite speckeld trout set up. My set up was a little light for these fish, but it was a blast catching them. Pulled the reel down Sat. to clean and inspect, the drag washer is just about wasted. We were fishing near structure and had to really crank down on the drag to turn them, but once they turned towards open water, we'd back off on the drag and let them run for a bit. I tried to use one of my baitcaster outfits, but I couldn't cast it with the light weight we had on the line, so i switched back to the spec rig. If any one cares to know, a Falcon rod will bend 180 without breaking. ;)

Re: My first fishing post
Sounds like a blast! I love live linning anything, from 1inch mummys to bigg poggies. You can feel them panic when they see the fish comming and then you know it is time for battle ;D
