bad luck Rudee Inlet
A friend of mine asked if I wanted to go stripper fishing out of Rudee Inlet va Friday (1/12). On the way out (22 mi north of rudee) I heard a squeal out of the mtr compartment (i/o) I told the captain and he said it's a noise from a new belt. Ok I believe him, (bad choice). After we put out the lines he wants to troll at 7kts. Now that is ok for deep water but not strippers (my belief). I keep hearing that noise. After 40 minutes I finally get him to slow to 1.5 mph soon as we slow we hook up on 3 fish at once. Lost all 3. Then the captain yells his idiot lights are lit and his eng temp is almost to max.
I pull the eng cvr and sure enough his new belt squeal is really the belt tensior for crank shaft belts to upper pulley that runs the water pmp, alt, and blower (diesel). It sheared the attachment bolt, no way to fix out there. We finally convince him to start in at 10:30am. I saw a hatchet handle (fish knocker) on dash so I used it to put light tension on belts to spin all mentioned above. I did that for 22 miles. It took us till 4:00pm to get back to ramp. That's the third time I've been out on his boat with him and the second time I've had to play mechanic to get us back in. Other time (gas eng) he had water in fuel problems so I had to keep dumping his fuel filter and replacing it back on so we could get in. That means I have a 66 2/3 chance of breaking down with this guy. I'm not going out with him anymore. o, yea No fish that friday. Went out again and fished in the area of rudee Inlet this past saturday 1/20, winds came up got really ruff 8 ft swell in ocean and when we got in the bay to go home 10 ft swells. It was so bad his 25ft grady as it was going down the backside of a wave (heading into wave) the nose would almost push into the next wake and we were only making about 6kts. We needed all 25 ft of his boat that day. By the way NO DAMN FISH AGAIN. |

Well, your first friend doesn't sound to be too astute when it comes to maintenance? Tell him to get his grear in shape even if your done with him. ;) As for going out Saturday, wow. I was at work all day, but y'all had to have a pair to even go out. I wouldn't have expected much as the water had to be dirty Saturday. Then again, if you don't go you don't know.
I didn't catch any fish at work either, so you did better than me by getting on the water ;D Airslot |

A good day of fixing your boat on the water is better than a bad day of fixing someone elses boat on the water.
Or something like that. |

Re: bad luck Rudee Inlet
Well its good to hear a report out of Rudee, even if it is a bad one. You did a good job getting back in. I know the feeling on "lost all 3". Sucks don't it? Some days that just happens, other days you get all 3 in.
Better luck next time. Blue |
