I would read "pogies" to be Porgies, which are nice eating salt water sunfish, but that may just be because I'm from CT.

Pogie is a local term up here for Menhaden or bunker. Porgies are referred to as Scup here.

Out at Cape Point they sometimes refer to them as "fatties" or "fatback".
