v21 vs v20

Does anyone have any thoughts on the v21 vs v20?

I thought they were the same design except for the transom, but I read a recent post that said the freeboard was larger on the v-20 and the scantlings (which I assume are stringers) were different too.

I have owned whalers all my life, but I now need something that works with a wife and baby. I love the style of these boats (remind me of the classic Lyman) and the quality of the hull seems very good. I assumed the v21 would be the best because of the extra foot, and the fact its newer. I also don't have the skills to take a chainsaw a transom, so I want the best hull I can get. Is there any reason that say a 92 v-20 would be better than a 95 v-21, assuming they were in the same condition?

Any thoughts from the board are appreciated - this board has already been an icredible resource for me. I am going to check out a v21 this weekend in Cape May.
Thanks,
John

Buckley, I've never been face-to-face w/a 21', but I got the HOTS for one big time...my '74 V20 is GREAT...don't get me wrong...it's just that when I do think about "movin'"...all I think about is a fully refurbished 21'... 8)...

NOW that having been said, MJ is right...20 and a 21 of same quality, you can't go wrong with either...unless a 21 just REALLY trips your trigger, don't pass up a 20 thinkin' you're gonna get LOTS more holdin' out for a 21...

Take a look at Pipe Dream's V20 in the Gallery...I wouldn't hold back on something like that waitin' on "the right" 21 to come along... ;)...of course if you run across one like that for sale, get ready for some DEEP diggin'... :o ;D

Buckley,

The 21 is a 21 b/c of the integrated transom bracket. Its a neat design IMO. If You are looking at a 92 v20 with a full transom with an aftermarket bracket, you may prefer that to the integrated one on the V21. Otherwise, You are looking at a regular outboard on the transom cutout of a v20 vs the v21 with the "better" IMO, transom arrangement.

The 21's are newer, have more modern seating, an integrated fishbox seat, rounded windows that are more modern looking, and have no teak. Whether this is what you want is another question. You like the classic "Lyman" look to the v-20 and I think an older model like Reelapeelin's shows that classic styling better then the more modern touches of the 21.

To answer your question, the only thing "better" about the 20 over the 21 assuming all other things being equal is the price. they are both nice boats.

BTW - I'm In NJ and I'll kep my eyes open for a nice one for ya.

Thanks everyone, this is very helpful. I am taking a v-21 on a sea trial on Sunday out of Cape May. I already went and looked at it last weekend - its in great shape, origional owner. If all goes well, I'll be on the forum Monday as an owner!

The hull on these boats really are a thing a beauty. They just don't make boats like this anymore, it's a shame.

I know Macojoe likes that Starboard - but I'm going for more of the Emmitt Fitz look. I'll be adding some nice teak to whatever I buy.

Don't get me wrong!! Teak is great looking!! I love it!!

But I use my boat and use it HARD!! I commercial fish from it all summer, Bass, Fluke, Scup, Sea Bass, Blue fish, and Cod.

Teak has no place on my boat!! It goes days even weeks sometimes with out one drop of water to clean it (except rain) I have no time for detailing!!

This is why I am the King of Starboard!! ;D

Good luck!!

I am now an owner of a v21! Purchased it yesterday, but can't bring it home for another two weeks. Previous owner was the origional buyer, took great care of her and was definitelly sad to let her go.

Here are some pictures:

Here is the helm. The Loran, Fishfinder and compass are enclosed in a lockable cabinet (Starboard I think), so you don't have to lug them on and off the boat...

Love that Carolina flair!
