Removing and replacing helm and cable
My 1990 V20 Cuddy doesn't have the glove box below the steering wheel.
I need to replace the helm and cable, so how do I get that out? After looking at it for several days it seems I have to remove the console. Those screws at the edge of the windshield don't look like they will come out with the windshield in place. Or, cut a hatch sized hole inside the cuddy, then replace with a hatch when done. Neither of those seem like a good solution. Am I missing an obvious solution? |
Have you tried an impact driver on the screws? They work pretty good.
|
I'm not sure they are stuck, I'm just not sure I can get any tool in there to get at them, without removing the windshield.

Can u cut a hatch hole below the helm? The bulkhead is three quarter ply, but the console is just glass, bout a quarter inch thick
|
Probably, but there is a 6" round speaker there now.
Would a rotary helm fit through that hole? |
If you have already bought the new one, pop the speaker out and see if u can get the new one in. I know I ve swapped out mine through the glove box hole. I have the teleflex NFB helm
My glove box opening is 6.5 x 16.5. If u do have to pull the console, you might be able to get the forward screws out with a right angle drive on a drill with a Phillips bit |
I haven't purchased the helm yet as I am going to purchase a cable and helm kit, but I need to get the old cable out first to measure it. I can't see anything at the helm end and the motor end has no markings.
This is the kit I plan on buying, it's for an I/O so I don't need NFB. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...1O1&th=1&psc=1 I'm going to try and get the old one out through the speaker hole. |
Looks like it s going to be a tight fit.
|
Yeah, a little tight. I was able to open the hole a little on one side that will still be covered by the trim ring. Came right out.
Date on the cable was 1989, original to the boat. 17 Feet is the length. |
Great news, I thought the OB was 17 ft, wasn t sure about the IO
