Spanish have arrived

Just like the swallows at Capistrano, the Spanish have arrived on schedule. Always heard the third foggy morning in March, they would be here. Monday was the third foggy morning, so my son and I went Tuesday.

They were here. Not Giants, but they made respectable tacos

Fried or grilled works, I've had both. I'd imagine smoked would be good also.

Nice! Man I love some smoked mackerel.

Fried & grilled are probably most common. Not the best eating of the mackerel family, but i try to bleed & gut as soon as i catch them, then into a saltwater ice slurry. This takes most of the blood taste out.

I personally don t freeze them, but a lot of people do.

I also know it s a regional thing, i think on the east coast, they taste better. Like bluefish up north are better that ours down here and our mullet are better than south Florida mullet.

Up here we use mullet for bait. Mullet run signals the unofficial start of bluefish in the surf.
