Xtreme control cables

Throttle and shift just “ ok” somewhat stiff in reverse so switching out , checking motor shift rod, and installing new Xtreme cables .

Will report on performance differential in few weeks

Looking forward to your report. I need to replace cables also. Wasn't sure if I was better off going with Yamaha cables or aftermarket.

Docking our boat is like trying to shift a 2 and 1/2 ton trunk with a bad clutch and rusty linkage. :oh::oh:

I installed two sets of those cables this week

I’ve tried adjusting the cables but cant get the 6”s in forward and still be able to put it in reverse. I messed around with it for quite awhile but the best I could get it to do was shift nicely into reverse and just grind in forward (or viseversa). I believe I need new cables or??? I have an 88 V20 with an mercruiser I/O. Where do I get the cables and are there any tutorials on how to do it? I’ve attached a picture of the room I have to work with. It doesn’t seem like much room to me but I’ve never done this. Any help is appreciated.

I'm unfamiliar with I/O but...

1. Is it in the water?
2. Does it shift and throttle ok at the motor without the cables?

3. with cables disconnected from motor, do they move easily with the shift lever?

4. I'm guessing the handle comes off the binnacle so you can remove the whole thing from inside the gunnel.

5. Cable at West Marine, Amazon, most marine supply houses. you will need to know the length of cables you need. look for number on existing cables or measure them. 2 feet too long is better than a foot too short.

6. How exactly were you adjusting them?

Not currently in the water. It does shift fine when manually using the shift cable to the motor. I’m sure your right about being able to remove the handle, I just need to figure out how. It’s more complicated then just the bolt behind the handle. I saw I could get the Xtreems at West Marine so I might go that route. I watched a few videos on you tube, this one seemed the most in depth https://youtu.be/-s_tgevX2aI. I was not able to get the 6”s he was talking about and still get the outdrive to go into reverse. After a lot of fine tuning, I got it to go smoothly into either forward or reverse but it would not full engage in the one or the other. Neutral was free and clear. Replaceing the cable that goes into the outdrive looks like a bit of a project. I should probably bring it by a local shop to see if I can get a quick adjustment or at least an experienced opinion on if the cables do need to be replaced. I’ve spent a small fortune this offseason and still have a pretty pricey engine repair coming after Memorial Day. It’s probably all my fault though as I have been secretly eyeing up a 79 Tiara 2550. I feel like my V20 knows my thoughts. :embarsed:
